Getting ready for World Maths Day!

Tuesday 6th October | 2 comments

The School Council met again today to discuss plans for World Maths Day and they have asked that I share the plan with everyone through the blog.

On World Maths Day, we would like everyone to have lots of fun doing lots of Maths, while also rising lots of money for Unicef, to help support Syrian refugee families.

    • Everyone is going to come to school dressed as a penguin, or wearing black and white! This is because we are all doing Maths based on the story, 365 Penguins. This is a story about penguins who have had to leave their home, because of the ice cap melting. While this is an environmental disaster, the story does also help us to reflect on what it would be like to have to leave your home because it had become an unsafe place to live in.
    • All day we will be doing Maths! The doors will open from 8.00am and some children will start the day with a Mathletics breakfast! In the morning every class will do some Maths based on the 365 Penguin story. In the afternoon, children may do other lessons, but links will be made to Maths, penguins and the Syrian refugee crisis.
    • After school – more Maths and more fun! The Mathletics clubs that take place on Tuesday’s will run on later and children will be able to keep playing until 5.00pm. After this, at 5.15pm, we will be having a special family film evening, in the South Hall. Together we will watch the movie, Happy Feet, and enjoy slush puppies, ice pops and pop corn! A donation of £3 for this event is requested, all proceeds going towards Unicef.
    • Making a difference together! As this is a very special whole school event, we will start with an assembly in the South Hall at 9.15am, led by the school council. Weather permitting, at the end of morning playtime, we will all gather in the South playground for an impromptu mob dance to the song, ‘I’m a penguin, and I’m a bird!’ This will be followed by a Numberfun, Keep Fit Song, with the moves led by the school council.

Here is the music for the Numberfun Keep Fit song, so you can practise this too!

Raising money for Unicef and Syrian Refugee families

All our school community is very concerned about the plight of so many Syrian families. Together we wanted to raise some money to try and help these families. Whilst on World Maths Day, we will be doing lots of Maths and having lots of fun, the main aim of the day is also to raise money for Unicef, to help them support the Syrian refugee families. There are several ways you can donate money.

  • Bring in a donation on the day – Tuesday October 13th.
  • Children in Year 2 – 6 have Mathletics Sponsorship forms. You can sponsor a Mathlete, for their total points during the week, October 12th – 18th.
  • Bring the family to the movie evening and enjoy ‘Happy Feet.’ The donation of £3 per family, includes ice pops, slush puppies and pop corn.
  • You can donate on our special Just Giving link – https://www.justgiving.com/FFPS  (Sponsorship money can also be paid directly into this Just Giving site. )

Many thanks to everyone for all their support and enthusiasm in the event.

We’ll be posting lots of pictures of the event, so please do check all our class blogs soon!

Thank you, from the Farsley Farfield School Council.
